“Perhaps it is music that will save the world" - Pablo Casals

Overview of Lesson policies:

  • Practice expectations: Recommended practice & listening times for the student should include 5-6 days of 10-20 minutes for the toddler age group, 20-30 minutes per day for beginners age kindergarten and up, 30-40 minutes for intermediate players, and 40-60 minutes for advanced players. Parental involvement helps get practicing done. Make practice a positive experience and don’t “tell” the child how to pratice, but encourage them to figure out their instruments by asking open-ended questions about what they are doing. Notes from each lesson will help to discover what should be worked on specifically each week.

  • Suzuki expectations: Parents and children are “both” a part of flute lessons, and the teacher makes the third point of the child-teacher-parent triangle. Listen to CD Music multiple times/day. Work on exercises assigned at least 5 days. Do respect the process of learning from teacher and gaining encourgament from parent. Make sure to review repertoire that has already been worked on constantly Be sure to participate in group classes 1x/month during fall and spring

  • Recitals: They are part of learning an instrument and are very exciting. I will schedule recitals where the students have the opportunity to perform at least once a year - outside of band concerts at school and various competitions and contests.

  • Group Lessons: This is a bonus lesson with other students in my studio at the same level. I will schedule these randomly according to my studio participation. It is important for flutists to have the opportunity to learn from playing with a group. We will play musical games to reinforce musical elements, do flute choir repertoire as well as learn about the music we play and how to practice it. A performance will result after several weeks of practice.
  • Monthly Tuition: $76.00 per month includes 4 half-hour lessons. Monthly payments are required, due at the first lesson of each month. This fee will remain the same regardless of the weeks in a given month.
  • Missed Lessons: There will be no payment adjustment for missed lessons, but make up lessons may apply (see below). Any adjustment for an extended illness or other extenuating circumstances for more than 2 lessons will be dealt with on an individual basis. *Please call 303-549-0632 or 303-948-2721 or email jeanmadsen@comcast.net to cancel.
  • Make up lessons: I will schedule make up lessons due to snow days, holidays, vacation days that I take, for your lessons missed when advance notice is given with at least 24 hour notice, or for a death in the family. I will offer make-up lessons for days that fall on a Holiday.

  • Vacation and Professional Days: I may take up to 6 lessons off a year for vacations, my own illnesses, holidays or professional development classes such as Suzuki training I am doing in June or Master classes, and will let you know well in advance. *For each day I have off, I will offer make-up times - UNLESS there are more than 4 days that your lesson day falls on during that month (i.e., when there are 5 days in the month). *If you are planning a vacation, please let me know well in advance if possible. I will do my best to make up missed times in the same month.

  • Cancellation: In the event of temporary cancellation of a month or more, lesson times cannot be saved unless absent time is paid in full. I will deal with this on an individual basis so please do not hesitate to talk about your needs. *The teacher reserves the right to cancel lessons of any student who is not sufficiently practicing and benefiting from the lessons. Please call 303-549-0632 or 303-948-2721 or email jeanmadsen@earthlink.net to cancel.

  • Punctuality: Prompt arrival is expected of the student at each lesson and extra time may not be accommodated due to other scheduled lessons.

  • Behavior: Good behavior, appropriate manners, positive attitude towards lessons and respect for the teacher are expected of the student. The teacher reserves the right to terminate when the student is not sufficiently benefiting from lessons.
